Beneath by Courtney Leigh (Dark villain romance with mermen)

In Deepwater Cove, love is good enough to eat.

When Maris Blake inherits her estranged father's house in the small coastal town, she moves back to her birthplace in search of a fresh start and an opportunity to face her fears and a dark past. All is going as planned until Kaspian enters her life. He's gorgeous, charismatic, and absolutely too good to be true.

Every little town has their stories. In Deepwater Cove, there's something sinister in the water and it's coming to shore looking for a heart. The problem is, it doesn't have to be beating.

(This book contains moments of dubious consent and violence. Proceed with caution)

*This book contains elements of dub-con and violence, which might trigger some readers*

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I recommend it for readers not scared of darkness, looking for a story full of suspense and enigmas.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐This was a really unique story, Maris was clearly troubled, vulnerable but tough and the author did a great job with that balance.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐This paranormal story got me reading late at night.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I am very impressed with what Courtney Leigh did with this story. She picks up an uncommon mythical creature and builds an entirely impressive story with it.

If you're unfortunate enough to live in the Scarlet Reach, you must learn three rules...

They call us hollow beasts, creatures with no souls. We are the cursed, the strange, and the outcasts made to live where no one else would dare.

Here, there are three important rules.

Always lock your doors at night.

Don't talk to dead loved ones.

And never go into the Shady Woods.

...I broke only one, but that was all he needed.

They say butterflies follow the dead.

Perhaps that's why they follow her.

She was flawed perfection the moment I saw her, my little butterfly.

Now she's in my woods and I will hunt. She may live or she may die. I will let the monster inside me decide.

Either way, she's mine.

This book contains graphic violence, sexual content, dub-con, and unsettling themes including thoughts of suicide.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I loved it! Couldn't put it down!! I really liked how different this world felt from the author's previous works.

⭐⭐⭐⭐With shades of Hannah Whitten's "For The Wolf," Courtney Leigh tells a story of horror, adventure, and romance. And she does it well.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐A very dark but a beautiful story.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I don't give out 5 stars on Goodreads willy-nilly, and this book really deserved them. Good characters, romance, world-building, and message

This book contains graphic violence, sexual content, and unsettling emotional trauma.

He will come for you. He will find you. He will destroy you. All my life, that's all they've told me.

It was a kindness, what Lucien did. Taking a girl from an asylum to raise her and care for her did not earn him any praise amongst the nobles. I should be thankful but...

Something is missing.

There is a dark void inside me. A past I can't remember. A part of me that's shattered.

On Allhalloween night, we are invited to the catacombs for what is promised to be an unforgettable masquerade by a mysterious Count of Norbrooke. With our faces hidden, we can lose ourselves to lavish celebrations without the burdens we carry otherwise.

But somehow, even with a mask... he found me.

I have gone by many names, but the whole world knows me as the Devil in Blue. The King of the Glyn, where all souls go before they reach their afterlife.

The title is taxing, but when I found her, everything became worth it.

Until she ripped my heart in two.

I plotted my revenge for years, but when I finally found my little bird, why couldn't I destroy her?

She claims she doesn't know me.

But I will play her game.

This book contains graphic violence, sexual content, and unsettling emotional trauma.

The waters are filled with terrors and the waves are red with blood...

Treson Harbor is a place plagued by terrifying monsters of the deep. Beautiful creatures of legend lurk below and they're hungry.

When no man is safe on the water, pirates and fishermen alike, people look to hunters.

Vidar "Bone Heart" Woelfson is the Captain of the Burning Rose, a ship known for her blood red sails and the ruthless nature of her crew. He has hunted more sirens than any other ship on the sea and unlike most, Vidar hardly does it for the money. He is haunted by events of his childhood and lives to see every daughter of the sea slaughtered.

Dahlia knows the ship with red sails well, but she knows its captain even better. The man who took everything from her as a child still hunts her waters and she will end him if it's the last thing she does.

Scarred and vengeful, Vidar and Dahlia will soon cross paths again after eighteen years and things certainly are not peaceful. But even greater horrors might force the two together in an unwilling partnership.

Their rivalry runs deep... their love will run deeper... but not without bloodshed.
