Beneath by Courtney Leigh (Dark villain romance with mermen)

In Deepwater Cove, love is good enough to eat.

When Maris Blake inherits her estranged father's house in the small coastal town, she moves back to her birthplace in search of a fresh start and an opportunity to face her fears and a dark past. All is going as planned until Kaspian enters her life. He's gorgeous, charismatic, and absolutely too good to be true.

Every little town has their stories. In Deepwater Cove, there's something sinister in the water and it's coming to shore looking for a heart. The problem is, it doesn't have to be beating.

(This book contains moments of dubious consent and violence. Proceed with caution)

*This book contains elements of dub-con and violence, which might trigger some readers*

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I recommend it for readers not scared of darkness, looking for a story full of suspense and enigmas.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐This was a really unique story, Maris was clearly troubled, vulnerable but tough and the author did a great job with that balance.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐This paranormal story got me reading late at night.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I am very impressed with what Courtney Leigh did with this story. She picks up an uncommon mythical creature and builds an entirely impressive story with it.

If you're unfortunate enough to live in the Scarlet Reach, you must learn three rules...

They call us hollow beasts, creatures with no souls. We are the cursed, the strange, and the outcasts made to live where no one else would dare.

Here, there are three important rules.

Always lock your doors at night.

Don't talk to dead loved ones.

And never go into the Shady Woods.

...I broke only one, but that was all he needed.

They say butterflies follow the dead.

Perhaps that's why they follow her.

She was flawed perfection the moment I saw her, my little butterfly.

Now she's in my woods and I will hunt. She may live or she may die. I will let the monster inside me decide.

Either way, she's mine.

This book contains graphic violence, sexual content, dub-con, and unsettling themes including thoughts of suicide.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I loved it! Couldn't put it down!! I really liked how different this world felt from the author's previous works.

⭐⭐⭐⭐With shades of Hannah Whitten's "For The Wolf," Courtney Leigh tells a story of horror, adventure, and romance. And she does it well.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐A very dark but a beautiful story.
